It made us feel so good to be able to do a nice thing for someone who didn’t expect it from us. Sometimes it can be something as little as holding the elevator for someone who is moving slowly and would have to wait for it to come back the next trip. Doesn’t it feel good to do something "extra" for folks who cross paths with us?
We also have the opportunity to do something nice for people we aren’t actually with. Fifteen minutes out of my busy day may mean a lot when I spend it visiting someone who can’t make it to church. Oh how they love to hear the news of CrossRoads and their friends. Or imagine their pleasure when they’ve walked down to check their mail and actually find something besides junk because you made the effort to send a cheery, "thinking of you" card.
How many other times do we make a difference without even knowing we did so? It may be that my kind words to a new server allowed her to, "regroup" and turn her unsuccessful evening around. I suspect there are many times each of us has lifted the spirits of one who was discouraged without our even knowing what that person’s trials are. Because we are Christ followers, it is in our DNA to be kind. As the scripture for this week said, "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." Galatians 5: 22-23.
May each of us, "light up the lives" of those we meet along the walk this next week and always. May others discover God’s love for them through our actions.
